I LOVE film. I love the way film looks and the intentionality that comes from shooting film. Each moment thoughtfully composed, captures a story, and channels my excitement into timeless art. There is nothing quite like the nostalgia of picking up an old photograph and being taken back to the moment when the memory was captured. Film encourages us to turn those intangible moments into a physical keepsake.Actually, shooting film has translated all of those feelings into when I shoot digital as well!
Which leads me to why I am a hybrid photographer, which means I shoot both digital and good old fashioned film. I love digital too because it gives us more instant gratification. So you can read your blog post the week after your wedding instead of waiting for all the film to come back. I also love digital because it handles low light, like receptions, a LOT better! In the film photography industry this is definitely the norm! To capture your day fully I capture it both on digital and film! So how exactly do I shoot hybrid on your wedding day? Every wedding day is different, so this will change wedding to wedding, but in an ideal world this is how I’d shoot a wedding day!
Indoors without a lot of window light will be shot 100% on digital. If there is a lot of natural light I will shoot a couple rolls of film in addition to digital. All of the details will be taken outside so that they can be shot with film!
Outdoors: I shoot the bridal party processional in digital, during the actual ceremony I shoot 1-2 rolls of film plus digital to capture all the most important moments like the first kiss. My second photographer will be capturing all those moments on digital!
Indoors: In darker indoor spaces I will shoot 100% digital to handle the low light.
In addition to digital I shoot 4-6 rolls of film! This way you get lots of yummy film, but also the ability to see some of your husband and wife photos ASAP!
Details are taken 80% in film and 20% in digital! That’s why I’ll even move details outside for the best light! If the reception is inside I’ll shoot those details in digital!
During the reception I put my film cameras away! Once the sun has set I will shoot 100% digital. I believe digital is the best option for low light situations and will serve you best!
I hope you enjoyed learning about how I shoot film during the wedding day! If you have any questions drop a comment!
